'Under The Pillow': A Poem by Jeffrey Yamaguchi

The old dentures

on the shelf at the thrift shop

made us laugh

I wouldn't know she actually purchased them

until years later

when I felt teeth under my pillow

and screamed

one very early Sunday morning.

Turns out she had been waiting days for me to notice.

We replay the joke on each other every so often.

Years go by

and there they are again, under the pillow.

Someday they'll end up back

on a shelf

at a thrift shop

some young couple will share a laugh

and maybe buy them.

The old joke finds its way

to being told again, and again.
